In the 1980's the legal profession faced a new adversary: advertising. Typical of their approach to challenges, the legal professional associations tried to limit and control how a lawyer presented her/his firm in newspaper ads, on television.

Before the early 1980's, lawyers advertised very little or not at all. Leonard Moen pioneered Seattle-area television advertising that offered to represent average people with legal difficulties. These ads targeted divorce settlements and how to deal with difficult insurance companies.
